Novel to Graphic Novel: The Art of Adaptation

In collaboration with Edgartown Books

The late Paul Auster’s New York Trilogy, is among his masterworks. Now all three tales have been adapted into graphic novels in a single volume by cartoonist and West Tisbury resident, Paul Karasik who will speak about their unique journey to publication.

The first novel of the Trilogy, City of Glass, was adapted 30 years ago with breakdowns by Karasik, and art by David Mazzucchelli. With Auster’s blessings before his untimely death, Karasik has now adapted the remaining two novels, Ghosts (illustrated by New Yorker cover artist, Lorenzo Mattotti), and The Locked Room (illustrated by Karasik).

BONUS SCREENING: “Bimbo’s Initiation” a surreally funny Fleischer Bros. cartoon from 1931, selected and introduced by Paul Karasik.

The Guardian has dubbed the 3-in-1 New York Trilogy volume, “…a stone-cold masterpiece.”

Two-time Eisner Award winner, Paul Karasik, is an internationally recognized cartoonist and teacher who began his career as the Associate Editor of Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly’s RAW magazine.

His works include “How To Read Nancy” (with Mark Newgarden), “The Complete Fletcher Hanks”, and “The Ride Together, a Memoir of Autism in the Family”, (with Judy Karasik).

Paul’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Vineyard Gazette, and The New Yorker.
