Israel’s official entry to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film and nominated for a record 13 Israeli Academy Awards (Ophir), notably winning Best Film and Best Actor, The Sea is a quietly majestic ode to the best of the human spirit. At once tender, wryly comic, and deeply profound, it tells the story of Khaled, a 12-year-old boy from a Palestinian village, who is granted the rare chance to see the sea for the first time on a school trip. But when his group reaches a military checkpoint, the soldiers declare his permit invalid and send him home, leaving him behind as his classmates continue onward.
“A moving father-son tale in the vein of ‘Bicycle Thieves’ (that) is sensitively attuned to the painful realities of the West Bank occupation.” – Alissa Simon, Variety
“Had he bothered to watch it, Israeli Culture Minister Miki Zohar would have seen that… “The Sea” is a gentle, small, understated film (and) Mohammed Ghazawi, who plays the young hero, is fully deserving of the Best Actor Ophir Award he received.” – Nirit Handerman, Haaretz – November 18th 2025

“A drama about a Palestinian boy who sneaks into Israel won the top prize at Israel’s version of the Oscars. The country’s culture minister… says it will defund (the) film awards.” –  The New York Times – September 17th 2025
