Joss Whedon, acclaimed filmmaker of last summer’s big-budget masterpiece The Avengers, has chosen as his next project one of The Bard’s great comedies.  Much Ado is chock-full of the bawdy humor, gender-bending, mistaken identity and true love we expect from Shakespeare.

During the grueling shoot for The Avengers, Whedon would often gather a group of friends at his Santa Monica home  to do casual readings of Shakespeare’s plays.  When they assembled to read Much Ado About Nothing, they realized the actors had the wit and chemistry necessary to bring the play to a new audience.

Shot on the sly in Whedon’s own backyard, this black and white modern adaptation of  a classic is the breath of fresh air we all need during the summer onslaught of aliens, monsters and superheroes.
