Judith Richland has spent much of her life embracing the role of a lifelong student, driven by an enduring curiosity about art, film, design, and the stories that connect us. She earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Cornell University, a master’s degree in Art History from Boston University, and two MFAs from Massachusetts College of Art: one in Fine Arts and the other in Motion Graphics and New Media/Film.
For twenty years, Judith owned and operated Richland Design Associates, her award-winning graphic design firm. During that time, she also served as President of the Boston chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, for two years.
Following her studies in New Media/Film, Judith began a teaching career at Simmons University, where she served as an Assistant Professor of Practice. Her courses included film editing, motion design, graphic communications, and international women in film. One of her proudest accomplishments was founding and directing the International Women’s Film Forum at Simmons, which she led for five years, welcoming women filmmakers from around the world to share their work and perspectives. After twelve years at Simmons, along with part-time teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University (formerly the Museum School), Judith decided it was time to pursue her longtime dream of making films of her own.
Since leaving academia, Judith has continued to build her presence in the film industry. She has served as a coordinator for Boston Film Fatales and has collaborated with director Arthur Egeli on several films. Her producing credits include Murder on the Cape (2017), available on Netflix; The Black Emperor of Broadway (2020), available on Amazon Prime; and Art Thief (2024) available on Amazon Prime, for which she served as Executive Producer and designed the film’s opening titles. Currently she is Executive Producer for Anne Packard: An Artist’s Resolve (2026), which is now touring film festivals.
In addition to producing, Judith is a screenwriter. Her screenplay Becoming Tennessee received two honors in 2021: Official Selection in the Ink and Cinema Competition and Quarterfinalist recognition in the Screen Craft True Story Showcase. She has been a member of Harvard Square Screenwriters for six years and recently joined its Board of Directors.
Through her work in design, education, filmmaking, and screenwriting, Judith continues to combine her passion for visual storytelling with her commitment to amplifying voices and bringing compelling stories to the screen.
