The Historic Movies of Martha’s Vineyard project, a pioneering and award-winning effort of the Vineyard Gazette, presents films shot on the Vineyard dating back almost one hundred years. Clips shown at the Film Center will include footage filmed from the Gay Head Cliffs to downtown Edgartown, including scenes shot of hurricanes in the 1950s, Island steamers and ferries in the 1940s, offshore swordfishing expeditions in the 1930s, and Vineyard beaches dating back to the late 1920s.
Presented with the support of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, now the custodian of a number of the original Island films & in collaboration with the Vineyard Gazette.
About Tom Dunlop & John Wilson
TOM DUNLOP– A free-lance writer long associated with the Vineyard Gazette and Martha’s Vineyard Magazine, Tom is also the author or editor of five books on Island subjects, most of them published by Vineyard Stories of Edgartown. With co-producer John Wilson, he created the Historic Movies of Martha’s Vineyard project in 2013, a pioneering effort by the Gazette to save, transfer, research and present old movies of the Island to the public. The effort won an Innovation Award from the New England Newspaper and Press Association in 2015. Tom lives in Edgartown.
JOHN WILSON– For the past twenty-three years John has worked as a producer and associate director in sports television, covering two Olympic games, five America’s Cups and many football, basketball, hockey and lacrosse games. In 2012 he produced The Chappy Ferry Movie, a short film accompanying The Chappy Ferry Book, written by Tom Dunlop and published by Vineyard Stories, and in 2013 began work with Tom on the Historic Movies of Martha’s Vineyard project. He has also co-produced a series of historic and contemporary vignettes of Island life that play before the previews at the Capawock and Strand theaters in Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. John lives in Edgartown.
