Set in the mountains of Tibet near Nepal, this film begins with mountaineer Karma (Gurgon Kyap) returning from a long journey with bad news: the son of Tinle (Thilen Lhondup), the village leader, died in the midst of the trek, leaving behind a wife, Pema (Lhapka Tsamchoe), and a son, Pasang (Karma Wangiel). Tinle cannot forgive Karma for the death of his son, and he banishes him from an upcoming voyage, in which a yak caravan will bring a load of salt across the mountains to be exchanged for grain. Despite Tinle’s edict, Karma sets out to follow the path on his own; when Tinle’s younger son Norbu (Karma Tensing Nyama Lama) declines his father’s request to lead the journey, the aging leader takes it upon himself to lead the yaks across the mountains, with Tinle and Karma meeting along the way. himalaya1HIMALAYA: L’ENFANCE D’UN CHEF was shot on location in the Himalayas, with a Tibetan cast and French camera crew, resulting in some dazzling footage of the rugged, unspoiled beauty of the mountain ranges.
