Rediscovered Noir
New Yorker cartoonist, Paul Karasik has chosen three great examples of Film Noir that are even better shown on the BIG screen at the MV Film Center– DOUBLE INDEMNITY, IN A LONELY PLACE, and SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS.
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS features the fast-talking Tony Curtis as a hungry press-agent on the prowl and the smart-talking Burt Lancaster, as the columnist who makes or breaks chumps like Curtis. The third character in this sparkling fast-paced film is New York City itself. To get this film to throb with pulse-quickening passion, the Award-winning cinematographer, James Wong Howe, took full advantage of the glitter and dark shadows of New York.
Paul Karasik has selected these films as prime examples of Must-See Film Noir. Paul is an Eisner Award winning cartoonist whose work has appeared in the New Yorker and whose graphic novels have been translated world-wide. He is the Development Director of the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School and lives in West Tisbury.
