BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.
Some interesting facts, according to MLIVE writer John Serba:
“It features actors playing actors, led by Michael Keaton as Riggan Thomas, a Hollywood superstar known for playing the iconic superhero Birdman. It should be lost on no one that Keaton played Batman twice, or that his primary “Birdman” co-stars include Emma Stone, featured in the current “Spider-Man” franchise, and Edward Norton, who once played the Incredible Hulk. Perhaps Keaton seems himself in the Riggan character, or not, but somewhat objectively speaking, he’s a beloved and talented veteran comic actor (“Mr. Mom,” “Beetlejuice,” etc.) who’s never tackled a prestige leading role or been considered for an Oscar. “Birdman” will absolutely change that: he’s great. Witty, funny, sharp. Maybe not huggable, but sympathetic. Great. Great great great.”
