Lukas Moodysson

Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin, Liv LeMoyne

‘We Are the Best!’ is a joyous celebration of youth, friendship and rebellion.WE ARE THE BEST! is Moodysson’s adaptation of his wife Coco’s graphic novel about three young misfits growing up in early ’80s Stockholm.

This is a film of flawless, natural performances, particularly from the three young leads. It’s 1982, and Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) and pixieish, mohawk-sporting KlaraKlara (Mira Grosin) are best friends, bolshy 13-year-old outsiders whose love of punk leads them to form their own band. There’s only one problem – they don’t have a guitarist. Enter Abba-esque Christian blonde Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne), the most unlikely axe heroine on the planet.

Moodysson’s sense of place and character is incredibly surefooted, and there’s boundless joy to be found in watching Bobo and Klara make their thunderously confident first steps towards punk superstardom. It’s hardly original material – much of the humour relies on our familiarity with high-school movie clichés – but the brisk script and effortless performances lend freshness.Withtender affection for his young characters and the period in which his film is set, Moodysson paints an ebullient and sharply observant portrait of DIY spirit and growing up different

In the second half a darker tone creeps in – boys get involved, with potentially band-shattering consequences. But it all comes together for a rousing, punch-the-air finale, and one of the finest end-credits gags in recent memory.

"There is hardly a shortage of movies about rock 'n' roll, but there are few as perfect - which is to say as ragged, as silly, as touching or as true - as "We Are the Best!," Lukas Moodysson's sweet and rambunctious new film." - NY TIMES

"A JOYOUS TIME CAPSULE. Captures the DIY empowerment of punk rock and the bond of female friendships in one blissful swoop. For those of us who've been hoping that Lukas Moodysson would return to the tender touch of early movies like Show Me Love and Together, the wait is over." - David Fear, The Village Voice

"VIBRANT, HILARIOUS AND POIGNANT. The best film in years from one of the planet's greatest filmmakers." - Bilge Ebari, New York Magazine/Vulture"OVERWHELMINGLY COMPASSIONATE.
