The Film Center is proud to welcome Berklee College of Music Professor Sheldon Mirowitz and the Berklee Silent Film Orchestra for a special presentation of their original new score, for our screening of the stunningly restored Safety Last!.
The comic genius of silent star Harold Lloyd is eternal. Chaplin was the sweet innocent, Keaton the stoic outsider, but Lloyd – the modern guy striving for success – is us. And with its torrent of perfectly executed gags and astonishing stunts, Safety Last! is the perfect introduction to his world. Lloyd plays a small-town bumpkin trying to make it in the big city, who finds employment as a lowly department store clerk. He comes up with a wild publicity stunt to draw attention to the store, resulting in an incredible feat of derring-do that gives him a head start on the climb to success. Laugh-out-loud funny and jawdropping in equal measure, Safety Last! is an unforgettable movie experience from a genuine legend. Janus Films is proud to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Lloyd’s crowning achievement with a new DCP restoration sourced from an original nitrate element.
The Berklee Silent Film Orchestra (BSFO) is dedicated to composing new, original scores for silent feature classics, and performing them live-to-picture. Based at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, in the world’s only undergraduate degree program in film scoring, the student orchestra composes its new works, and performs as an ensemble, under the leadership of Professor of Film Scoring Sheldon Mirowitz (Outside Providence, Missing in America). To date, the BSFO has scored seven iconic silent features (Sunrise, It, Battleship Potemkin, Piccadilly, Faust, Our Hospitality, and Safety Last!) all commissioned by the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts, as part of the theater’s Sounds of Silents™ program, which champions silent film music performance. The recipient of a special commendation from the Boston Society of Film Critics, the BSFO has also performed in the new Nantucket Dreamland Theater, and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
